I am a Linux user, as one other person has asked I thought it prudent to say so, but I do sometimes flirt with the enemy, if only to keep up to date with what's going on in the world.
Anyways... Upon running my choice of AV/Firewall software on said new laptop (in this case it was AVG-full), my gadgets stopped working correctly.
The clock appeared black only and other gadgets did not appear at all, apart from the 'x' was still present to close them, and the little 'i' symbol.
So, here is a little fix around for it that I have sorted and figured I should share it to the world, as is the nature of things;
This erratic gadget behaviour is observed, if the XML registration is missing in the system, which is probably to do with the AV installation, somehow. I suspect others out there have experienced other methods of creating this problem, but that of course is not the issue here.
TO FIX THE PROBLEM USE THE FOLLOWING STEPS;
- Close Windows Sidebar. To do so (Windows 7 remember), Press WinKey+R > type taskmgr and press enter > Processes tab > select sidebar.exe > click end process button.
- Open an elevated Command Prompt window. To do so, click Start, click All Programs, click Accessories, right click Command Prompt, and then click Run as Administrator. This will not work without the Elevated Command Prompt.
- In the Command Prompt window, type the following and press ENTER after each one:
regsvr32 scrrun.dll
regsvr32 jscript.dll
If the registration was successful, you'll see the message DllregisterServer has succeeded for each command executed. Open Windows Sidebar (sidebar.exe) and check if the problem has been resolved.
It sorted my problem out nicely, so it should for you too :)

If for some reason the above does not work for you, there are two other things you can try; both of which you can find in the comments below...
However, and for your convenience, here is the direction for what has now become termed the 'L' trick;

"My solution was: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\Zones\
with pseudo-graphic number, you'll see it before zone number 0.
It seems this is a bug of Adobe flash player update, though I am not sure. The pseudo-graphic number they speak of before zone number 0 looks like a miniature upper case "L"."..just Delete it and thats it:) good luck".
So basically, go find this key in your PC registry (use google if you need to learn how), and delete the one called 'L'.
Please do be careful when exploring the depths of your registry. Almost anything can be deemed as critical to system operation and anything you remove that you don't know what it is, could seriously mess with your system! Ultimately it should be fine to remove said file, but I do have to offer the warning too, just to make sure that you remain vigilant. Windoze registry can be a very fickle beast to the untrained...
Good luck!

IT WORKS..thanx a lot buddy..my gadgets were not working since i uninstalled my Avast Internet Security. The gadgets used to reappear when i restore the system with Avast, but if i don't..it was a mess.
ReplyDeleteThanx Again
Thanks mate this was driving me mad.All fixed now on my nice new Samsung R780
ReplyDeleteI'm glad that I've been able to help :)
ReplyDeleteI think that with the advent of Vista, Microsoft are beginning to experiment with gadgets and widgets as a native tool system for the Windows environment.
Where-as Linux and OSX have been doing it for years already.
About bloody time really! And although Windows is still crappy Windows (no escaping that I'm afraid), the platform is actually a lot better than it used to be and loads more stable. But still not stable enough for my liking...
I find it hard to believe that a bug as simple to fix as this, is left in retail versions of this software.
Anyone that likes Windows 7 as an OS and has a liking for basic command line programming, should really check out Ubuntu - it's not as hard as one might think and easily rivals Windows 7. Ooh yeah... it's free too :o)
http://www.ubuntu.com/
Unfortunately, didn't work for me. I really thought it was the solution when I read the entry because I've got the same little corrupted 'i' for the weather gadget, but some of the other gadgets work okay and others are cracked. Clock and CPU monitor works okay but the calendar just shows the orange background and nothing else. The currency gadget opens but is borked - just says "bad number" and that's it.
ReplyDeleteTried that DllregisterServer, but it unfortunately didn't work. Thanks though.
it works.
ReplyDeletetnx
Nice fix Buick, im a linux user too but found a Nagios gadget and wanted it running on my 7 laptop.
ReplyDeleteSorted cheers
unfortunately, it didn't work. all my gadgets are still corrupted. any other suggestions?
ReplyDeletei've try the step but it didn't work..help me :'(
ReplyDeleteI see that this fix works for some but not for others.
ReplyDeleteI'm afraid that I don't have time at this point for Windows (LoL), sorry.
so I suggest for anyone still having gadget issues, to Google 'reinstall windows 7 gadgets'.
That should give you some positive results.
If you're still having problems then perhaps you could try one of the other gadget programs out there (They're free in Linux! and better!).
Good luck!
hey...thanx...d same prob was with me...n i was really panic with dis....bt its solved nw..........thanxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
ReplyDeleteDidn't work in my situation.
ReplyDeleteHad same identical problem as you described, but the solution did not work. Rats!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for the fix...now most of the gadgets work again.
ReplyDeleteMy problem came after I unstalled McAfee(which was a free 60 day trial on my new Dell Laptop computer). I was do disappointed to see that the gadgets would not work. This fix did the trick!!
I had the same problem after catching a Trojan- my gadgets where only blank pease...nothing worked for me...My solution was: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\Zones\

The previous solution worked fine for me!
ReplyDeleteAnd I also experienced this problem after an Adobe update. Thanks.
Oh yeah!
ReplyDeleteThis "L" thing was the problem for me too.
Thanks man.
Hi, I'm astonished, because the "L" thing has worked for me.
ReplyDeleteI was trying many things and nothing realy worked.
And I can't imagine how "anonymous" could figure it out!!!
I'd like to know how he did it!!!
Thanx a lot!
Another method to solve this issue, for those that still have an issue, is to reset the Sidebar configuration. Thus;
ReplyDeleteFirst, right-click on the Sidebar icon in the system tray, and then choose Exit.
You should receive a message asking if you really want to close, which you do.
Next you’ll want to check Task Manager to make sure that there are no sidebar.exe processes running that shouldn’t be. If there are, just right-click and use End Process on each of them.
Resetting the Sidebar to Defaults
Open up a windows explorer window and then paste the following into the location bar:
%localappdata%\microsoft\Windows Sidebar
This will open up the Sidebar gadgets folder, where you should see a file named Settings.ini.
You’ll want to rename this file to something else, or at least make a backup of the file elsewhere. This file contains your current sidebar configuration.
Now, once you re-launch Sidebar from the Start Menu, you’ll notice that a new Settings.ini is created immediately.
If you are still having issues with a gadget, you can open up the Gadgets folder that you see above, and you’ll see a list of all user-installed gadgets:
You can delete any of these folders if you want (always backup your files first).
YAY THANK YOU WORKED PERFECT
ReplyDeleteThe last one is the best solution, it works perfectly.
ReplyDeleteThe solution did not work.
ReplyDeleteTHANK YOU MAN
ReplyDeleteTHANK YOU
Count me in with the "L" folder being deleted in the registry working for me! Thanks guys. I was losing my mind trying to troubleshoot the corrupted gadgets. Thanks a lot for NOTHIN', Adobe.
ReplyDeleteThe solution was: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\Zones\
ReplyDeleteThis solution work for my pc, and also fixed the problem of ccleaner as well.
Deleting the entry in the registry really did the trick.
ReplyDeleteThank you very much.
The "L" trick works. The others did not.
ReplyDeleteHope nothing else stops working, though!
Many thanks.
Bump
ReplyDeleteThe "L" trick works. The others did not.

Wow!
ReplyDeleteHey 'Anonymous', I hope you check in to see all these other comments about the 'L' trick in the registry.
Thank you SOOOOooooo much. This was driving me crazy!
and Buick, thanks for having the option for anonymous posters. Had he had to register, I suppose it is unlikely we would have received this valuable info.
But one little question, HOW on earth did you know how to find this?
Thank u very much!
ReplyDeleteAfter deleted "L" and redo
regsvr32 msxml3.dll
regsvr32 scrrun.dll
regsvr32 jscript.dll
It OK now.
dll re-register didnt work for me.

ReplyDeleteThanks for the post but it didn't help me to fix my problem. My sidebar seems to be corrupted - when I move any gadget on the desktop - they either appear in black or didn't show at all.
ReplyDeleteTo all, who was like me not able to fix it: follow http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2515657 (see comments above). I tried 3 of 4 steps to fix it, described on Microsoft's site and only #4 got it working again. Simply uninstall and install it again... Thanks to all!
